Tips

  1. To record, you must click on the Volume Control button and then nudge the Record Control for the Microphone to adjust it slightly each time you log on in the PC lab.
  2. When you click on the Close File    button, the dialog box which asks if you would like to save your file only appears for 10 seconds. So click on Yes immediately or you will lose your recording of that lesson.

Opening a Foreign Languages Class File

  • Log in to your PC Lab Account.
  • On the desktop, note that there are three Language Lab folders
  •   Double-click on the folder FL ClassFiles
Tip: From the menu, select View —› Details  
to see the full detailed names of the classes.
  • Double-click to open your class folder (e.g. French 1010)
  • Double-click to open the chapter (e.g. Chapitre 1)
  • Double-click to open the language exercise you want to do (e.g. Segment1a-Prononciation.mp3)

Playing and Recording a Lesson

  • The Sony Soloist program will open and begin converting the file you selected from the MP3 format to the WAV format. Wait for this step to be completed.
  • Before you begin to record your lesson, click on the Volume Controls button and nudge the Record Control for the Microphone slightly to ensure that your voice will be recorded.
  • Start the lesson by clicking on the Play button and then click on the Red Record button.
  • Follow the instructions on the tape and speak promptly as the recording progresses.

 

To set bookmarks, listen and then click on 1 to 5 to mark a location. To clear, click on CLEAR and then on the number of the bookmark you wish to clear.

volume control to ensure that it is picking up
your voice.

Saving Your Recording

  • When you have completed your recording, click on the Close File button which allows you to save your recording.
  • The dialog box which asks if you would like to save your file only appears for 10 seconds. So click on Yes immediately or you will lose your recording of that lesson.

 

  • Rename your file to include your name and any other information that your instructor requests.
  • Note that the file is saved in the audio folder under the temp directory.   It will no longer exist there once you log off your PC Lab account.
  • Wait as the WAV file is converted to MP3 format.

Submitting Your Recording

  • On the desktop, double-click on the folder Temporary Audio to open it.
  • Double-click on FL Completed Assignments to open it.
Tip:  From the menu, select View —› List to see 
the full detailed names of the classes.
  • Double-click to open your class
  • Double-click to open the chapter folder if applicable

Closing and Logging Off

  • Click on the x in the upper right corner to close the Sony Soloist program and any folders.
  • Or click on the SONY name to see a floating menu or right-click anywhere on the Sony Soloist to get the floating menu. You may exit from the floating menu, as well as from the horn symbol in the upper left corner of the program.
  • Double-click on the Logoff icon to exit your PC Lab account.
