Managing Gemini Email at TTU

Checking disk space  Saving in WebMail Saving in Outlook Express
Forwarding email Name change or leaving TTU Other steps to regain space

YOUR EMAIL WILL NOT BE DELIVERED IF YOUR DISK QUOTA (5MB) IS FULL.

  • Be sure to delete messages you do not need, especially those with attachments, or save them to a floppy disk or zip disk and then delete them from your email account.
  • Note that the maximum size of an individual message including attachments and the necessary email overhead may not exceed 3 MB.
  • Floppy disks, zip disks, and USB flash drives all fail, so be sure to backup all important documents to at least two places.

How can I check to see how much space I have available?

  • In the PC Labs, double-click on the Gemini icon on the desktop.
  • Type your username and press [Enter].

  • Type your password (NOTHING WILL SHOW) and press [Enter].

  • $ show quota    (shows your used and available disk space in blocks)

  • $ lo    (to log out)

How do I save messages and attachments in WebMail?

WebMail is a web based application, so use your browser's commands.

  • In Internet Explorer, from the menu, select File > Print to print an important message before you delete it.

  • In Internet Explorer, from the menu, select File > Save As to save a file before deleting.
  • Navigate to a location where you wish to save your message, such as a zip disk or USB flash drive, or the My Documents folder in the PC labs.
  • Type a file name
  • Select Text File as the type
  • Click Save.

To save an attachment:

  • Click on the message to open it in WebMail.
  • Click on the attachment name to open it.

  • From within your browser, select File > Save As

How do I forward my TTU email to another address?

  • Type your username and password (nothing will show as you type password)

  • At the $ prompt type mail:
    $ mail

  • At the mail prompt:

  • mail> exit

  • $ lo

Also of help may be:

  • mail>  SET NOFORWARD    (to turn off forwarding)
  • mail>  SHOW FORWARD  (to see if you are having your mail forwarded)

What do I need to do if my name changes or I leave the university?

  • Let the TTU Records Office know of the change.
  • Your username will be changed AFTER the current semester ends.
  • If you withdraw from TTU, your email and pclab accounts will be deactivated the next day.
  • If you graduate, your email account will remain active for several months, but your PC Lab account will be deactivated at graduation.

What other steps can I take if I still can not recover space by deleting my email messages?

Occasionally, you may need to directly telnet to gemini if you have deleted messages, but still have not recovered your disk space.

  • In the PC Labs, double-click on the Gemini icon on the desktop.
  • Type your username and press [Enter].

  • Type your password (NOTHING WILL SHOW) and press [Enter].

  • $ show quota    (shows your used and available disk space in blocks)

  • $ mail

  • MAIL> purge/reclaim  (to purge and reclaim space from deleted messages-this is usually done automatically, but occasionally there may be a situation where it was not done automatically)

  • mail> compress   (This creates a file mail.old which must be deleted.)

  • mail>exit

  • $ del  [.mail]mail.old;* (Type exactly as shown here with only a space after del -- no other spaces.  This will delete the mail.old file created in the mail subdirectory.)

  • $ lo    (to log out)

If you use Gemini for purposes other than email, look for unnecessary files:

  • $ dir/size/col=2

  • $ del/confirm  *.txt;      (For example, to delete files that end with txt)

  • Make sure NOT to delete anything named login.com or mail.mai
