Getting Started:  PC Labs, Gemini, and Email Overview
for Students

Contents

Introduction

As a student, you have access to at least two different accounts. One is your email account (Gemini)  and the other is a University PC Lab account. You can access your email account in several ways. It you use WebMail you can check your email anywhere you have access to the internet.

To find your username, go to http://www.tntech.edu/phonedirectory/default.htm and search for your name.  The first part of your email address before the @ is your username.

Logging In to Your PC Lab Account

In a University PC Lab to log in press: CTRL + ALT + DEL

Example for Jane Q. Smithsonian
SS# 123-45-6789
User Name: jqsmithson21
Password: 123456789

Note that only *s will show, not your password.

If the server rejects your login, try again to be sure you didn’t make a typo. If you still can’t logon, go to Clement Hall 226 and ask Operations (at the window) to reset your PC Lab password to your social security number.

Setting Your PC Lab Password

The first time you login to your PC lab account, a box will appear notifying you that "You are required to change your password at first logon."

In the PC Labs, your password is CASE SENSITIVE so whether a character is typed as a capital or small letter matters to the system. Be sure the CAPS lock is off.

Choose a password of 6 or more characters that you can easily remember, using letters and digits. No spaces or special characters, such as #, $, or %, are allowed.  No spaces are allowed.  Also, you cannot use common words found on the system dictionary. You could use the first letters of a phrase with some numbers, such as "I am here to learn until 2007" which would make your password: iahtlu2007

Choose a password that you will remember. Keep your password secure; don’t give it to anyone else, or leave it where someone could see it. You are responsible for your account.

Changing Your PC Lab Password

Changing Your Gemini Pasword

All student mail accounts reside on the Gemini server. Your username on Gemini is the same as it is for your PC Lab Account. To use your email for the first time, you must change your password on Gemini, which is initially set to your social security number. It is also good practice to change your password from time to time, at least at the beginning of each semester.

Choose a password of 6 or more characters that you can easily remember, using letters and digits. No spaces or special characters, such as #, $, or %, are allowed.  No spaces are allowed.  Also, you cannot use common words found on the system dictionary. You could use the first letters of a phrase with some numbers, such as "I am here to learn until 2007" which would make your password: iahtlu2007   Your PC Lab and Gemini passwords can be the same.

When you first logon in one of the PC Labs, the Internet Explorer browser will be launched to display campus announcements.

You have a limited amount of space available on Gemini, so delete mail messages and files you do not need. YOUR EMAIL WILL NOT BE DELIVERED IF YOUR QUOTA IS FULL.

Disk Space on Your PC Lab Account

Each student is allocated space on the U:User drive. This is 50 MB in size. You can save files to this space and they will be there the next time you logon.

You also have access to temporary storage space under the T: directory. Files that you place here will be deleted when the next person logs in.

You access each of these drives from the Start menu under Programs —› Windows NT Explorer.

To reply to a message:

With the message to which you wish to reply on screen, type:

    MAIL> reply

This will invoke the EVE editor, and you will see the original message on your screen in EVE. Delete any extraneous text and type your reply. To send your message, press CTRL + Z. To cancel without sending, press CTRL + B or PF4 (minus sign on the numeric keypad in upper right corner), then type QUIT on the command line.

To save a message to a file:

With the message on screen that you want to extract to a file, type
