Advisement Guidelines

According to Tennessee Board of Regents Guidelines, students needing Academic Development Program DSP courses must enroll in and satisfactorily complete those courses during the initial term(s) of enrollment. Students may concurrently enroll in college-level courses which do not require prerequisite DSP skills. Students placed and enrolled in a DSP class are not permitted to withdraw from that class except for serious circumstances and then only with the permission of the program leader. A grade of 'C' or higher is required for progression to the next academic level.

Students with valid ACT scores (less than 3 years old by first day of classes) will be placed by ACT subscores.

The Basic levels (remedial or 0700 levels) of DSP courses are no longer offered at TTU. Students whose ACTs place them into the basic level may be denied admission to TTU until completion of the basic requirements. Requirements may be met by

  1. completion of the basic-level course through a community college from which grades may be transferred to TTU
  2. retaking the ACT and obtaining a score that will place the student into the developmental level or higher
  3. taking the COMPASS placement test and scoring at the developmental level or higher.

Students whose ACT Reading subscores are 1-11 [or whose SAT Composites are 510 and below] will be denied admission to TTU. Students whose ACT Reading subscores are 12-14 [or whose SAT Composites are 520-700] will be placed on an Admission Decision "Waiting List" pending completion of the COMPASS placement test. Students who score at the developmental level or higher on COMPASS will be admitted to the University, provided that all other Admission requirements have been satisfactorily met. Students who score below the developmental level will be denied admission to TTU pending completion of basic-level requirements and satisfactory evaluation of reapplication to TTU.

Advising using the R screens--Quick Check List

In response to several questions about interpreting the computer screens dealing with students who have ADP requirements, the following is an explanation of the types of information available on the 'R' screens.

If you are advising a student,

Advising using the R screens--Detailed Version

R Screens

The 'R' screens are screens R30, R22, and R20. These screens contain information about student COMPASS testing requirements, scores, and placement, including ACT Placement.. The 'R' screens are set (by computer programs from the Tennessee Board of Regents) based upon the following criteria:

R30 shows which classes a student was placed into by ACT scores or has tested into by COMPASS, as well as if and when the courses were completed. If R30 is blank,

R22 PRE indicates which tests were taken, when tests were taken, and subscores and total scores. A total score of 00 indicates that the test was NOT taken. A 1st form typ:3 (in the upper right corner) indicates that no tests were taken.

R20 indicates (usually) which tests were taken, which areas and levels a student tested into or out of, the date of testing, and if courses have been completed. R/D Pretest Status indicates which tests were taken (indicated by a C for completion of test) or need to be taken (R for required). The default of N (no requirement) will appear if the student's admission process has not completed all its cycles or if the test was not required. A letter T indicates that the student has transfer credit in that area. Ts are usually set automatically when the student's transfer transcript is loaded by the Records Office.

The R screens usually look something like this:

Note: Courses are listed as RDS if the old AAPP test was taken prior to Summer Term testing for 1996. All courses from Summer Term testing and those until Summer 2001 will be listed as ADP (Academic Development Program) due to the program's name change. The course number designations remain the same. All courses from Summer Term 2001 testing and those in the future will be listed as DSPW for writing, DSPR for reading, DSPM for math, and DSPS for Learning Strategies. The numbering of the rubric has also changed: 0700 is for basic (remedial) level courses; 0800 is for developmental; 0850 is for the intermediate level of math.

* P in CRS/ST indicates that the student received a permanent waiver for the course and does not have to take the class.

** C in CRS/ST indicates that the student has successfully completed the course.

*** X in CRS/ST indicates that the student completed the course at another TBR institution.

**** R in CRS/ST indicates that the student is required to take the course during the upcoming term.

E in CRS/ST indicates student currently enrolled in course

S in CRS/ST indicates an in-house test waiver

Q in CRS/ST indicates a Nelson Denny Test waiver

J in CRS/ST indicates course replaced by combined DSP course

K in CRS/ST indicates course replaced by combined DSP and College-Level course

L in CRS/ST indicates completion by "Alternate Delivery"

This student tested into writing, reading, study skills, and math. He has completed ADP 082 Developmental Writing [DPSW0800], ADP 071 Remedial Reading [DSPR0700] (by challenge test), ADP 081 Developmental Reading [DSPR0800], ADP 080 Study Skills [DSPS0800 Learning Strategies], and ADP 073 Remedial Mathematics [DSPM0700](at another school). He needs to register for (note the 'N' in the Enroll In/Trm column) DSPM0800 [old ADP 083 Developmental Math I], completion of which will be followed by his enrolling in DSPM0850 [old ADP 084 Developmental Math II].

NOTE: If this screen is blank, check R20 to see if the student has tested or needs to test. Check screens 210 or 221 (ACT1) and A89 to confirm testing requirements. Students with no ACTs are usually over age 21 or are transfer students. Students who meet testing requirements must test (low ACTs, A89 deficiencies, transfer of less than 60 hrs. with no English or algebra-based college-level math, over age 21, GED, etc.). To be considered valid, ACT scores must be less than 3 years old on the first day of classes for the first term enrolled. Students with GED scores must test in all areas unless they present valid, satisfactory ACT scores. In case of multiple ACT scores, the TBR computer program chooses the highest scores to form a DSPP-coded set of scores for used for placement.

OP/ID= operator ID (if transfer scores were entered by hand or if a course has been permanently waived, this shows who made the change.) If the OP/ID is ACT1 or SAT, the student was placed by ACT.
