Learning Support Program Goals

Goals for Developmental Mathematics students are:

  • To develop problem-solving skills.
  • To learn to manage resources (time).
  • To assist in success in nonmathematical courses that require a grasp of algebraic fundamentals.
  • To view mathematics as a language of patterns.
  • To develop the ability to translate data into mathematical language and to interpret that language.

Goals for Developmental Reading students:

  • To improve the fundamental thinking, reasoning, and language abilities that students need for academic success
  • To engage students in the active process of thinking
  • To practice thinking clearly about complex, controversial issues
  • To learn to relate critical thinking abilities to daily life
  • To improve vocabulary and reading ability
  • To practice critical analysis and communication with others

Goals of Developmental Writing are:

  • To provide the groundwork of basic communications skills so that students are able to write on a level that will permit them to function successfully in their chosen fields of student in the university community
  • To provide students the opportunity to prepare themselves for the work required in freshman composition
  • To provide students with the opportunity to acquire an understanding of levels of usage and of appropriate usage for various situations
  • To provide students with basic skills and assurance in using standard conventions of written English
  • To provide students with the background for recognizing writing as a process involving collecting ideas, drafting, revising
  • To provide students with the skills for accomplishing basic research
  • To provide students with the opportunity to develop the ability to respond actively and imaginatively to literature
