Students are initially placed in DSP Math classes based upon their ACT scores.

Students with valid ACT scores (less than 3 years old by first day of classes) will be placed by ACT subscores as indicated below:

* The Basic levels (remedial or 0700 levels) of DSP courses are no longer offered at TTU. Students whose ACTs place them into the basic level may be denied admission to TTU until completion of the basic requirements. Requirements may be met by

  1. completion of the basic-level course through a community college from which grades may be transferred to TTU
  2. retaking the ACT and obtaining a score that will place the student into the developmental level or higher
  3. taking the ASSET placement test (pencil and paper test ) and scoring at the developmental level or higher.

Students who wish to challenge the ACT placement will take the Mathematics Portion of the ASSET Placement Test [pencil and paper, no calculators]. You may challenge a course placement provided that you have not already been enrolled in or received a grade for the course. If you have already challenged a math placement with the COMPASS or ASSET test and have taken the required course, you may challenge the next course by taking the pencil-and-paper ASSET test.

Example: Your ACT scores placed you in remedial math (DSPM0700), and you challenged the placement. ASSET also placed you in remedial math, so you completed the required course. You may now challenge the Developmental Math I placement (DSPM0800) by taking another pencil-and-paper test.

If you are sincere in your goal to challenge a mathematics placement, then you should prepare for the challenge test as if it were a final examination.

Evaluation Procedure

The ASSET Placement Test in Mathematics assesses students' basic math skills, as well as application and analysis. Basic numerical skills include:

  • Operations with whole numbers, fractions, and decimals
  • Ratio, proportions, and percent
  • Applications involving area, perimeter, averages, and charts.

Algebra skills include:

  • Operations with signed numbers, including absolute value and square roots
  • Operations with polynomials, including factoring
  • Solutions of equations and inequalities, including graphing
  • Applications involving averages, charts, area and volume, and translating English to algebra.
  • Algebraic operations involving factoring, rational expressions and roots and rational exponents
  • Solutions of equations and inequalities including quadratic equations and linear systems
  • Geometry, including graphing, Pythagorean theorem, angle relationships and similar triangles
  • Applications involving charts, probability, and statistics.

ASSET Mathematics Scores

An ASSET Elementary Algebra Skills score of 0-70% will place the student in DSPM0800, Elementary Algebra. A score greater than 70% will place the student in DSPM0850, Intermediate Algebra.

An ASSET Intermediate Algebra score greater than 79% indicates that the student is ready for college-level mathematics.

A challenge test is given to ensure the accuracy of placement. This is a 25-minute test equivalent to a comprehensive final exam for either Algebra I or Algebra II. Scheduling for the challenge test is arranged during the first class meeting. You must be registered for your required DSP math course in order to be eligible to take the challenge test.

DSPM0700 Pre-Algebra ........................................................ Lec. 3. Credit3.

This course is no longer offered at TTU as of 2003F. To complete requirements for this course, students must pass the course with a 'C' or better at a community college. For further information about TTU's requirements, contact the Academic Development Program office at 931-372-3476.

Course content: Fundamental operations and concepts involving basic arithmetic; area, perimeter and volume; operations with signed numbers; and simple linear equations.

DSPM0800 Elementary Algebra .......................................... Lec. 3. Credit 3.

Prerequisites: DSPM0700, satisfactory ACT score, or satisfactory placement test score.

Course content: Review of operations on signed numbers, linear equations/inequalities, graphing and linear systems, exponents, polynomials, and factoring..

DSPM0850 Intermediate Algebra ......................................... Lec. 3. Credit 3.

Prerequisites: DSPM0800, satisfactory ACT score, or satisfactory placement test score and two high school algebra credits.

Course content: Operations on rational and radical expressions/equations; systems of equations/inequalities; linear, polynomial and exponential functions; matrix methods (linear systems).

ADPM0865 Algebra ............................................................... Lec. 3. Credit 3.

Prerequisite: No ADP math required or prior completion of ADP math or transfer credit in college-level, algebra-based mathematics.

Course content: Operations on rational and radical expressions/equations; systems of equations/inequalities; linear, polynomial and exponential functions; matrix methods (linear systems).

By request from the School of Nursing, special sections of ADPM0865 offer preparation for MATH1530 Probability and Statistics: these sections are 009, 019, and 029. Students whose majors require MATH1530 and whose ACT Math subscores are less than 23 are generally advised to take ADPM0865 before taking MATH1530.

DSPM0870 Elementary/Intermediate Algebra ..................... Lec. 5. Credit 5.

Prerequisites: Satisfactory placement test score and two high school algebra credits, ability to self-pace, ability to use computer software with confidence.

Course content: Review of operations with signed numbers. Fundamental concepts of algebra including linear and polynomial functions, rational expressions, radicals, complex numbers, applications, solutions to systems of equations.

ADPM0990 Geometry ........................................................... Lec. 3. Credit 3.

This is the course used to remove a high school deficiency in geometry.

The basic structure of geometry stressing proficiency in developing formal proofs, basic constructions, and algebraic methods of solving problems. (This course may not be taken for credit in any degree program at TTU). Students enrolled in ADPM0990 to remove a high school deficiency must complete the course with a grade of "C" or better.


For options about faster-paced classes or a course designed for students who did not require assessment or who tested out of Math but wish to have a better background before proceeding with college-level math, check with the AD Program Leader in Foster Hall, room 407. Online courses are also available for DSPM0800 and DSPM0850; as part of the Regents' Online Degree Program (RODP), section R50 of DSPM0800 and DSPM0850; and as an intensive combination course, DSPM0880 through TTU. DSPM0880 is an online course comprised of coursework for both DSPM0800 and DSPM0850.
