Reading

Students are initially placed in DSP Reading classes based upon ACT scores.

Students with valid ACT scores (less than 3 years old by first day of classes) will be placed by ACT subscores as indicated below:

Reading 1-11 Basic Reading-- DSPR0700--not offered at TTU*
12-14 "Wait List": Admission decision pending COMPASS results**
15-18 Developmental Reading-- DSPR0800
19 and above No Reading Requirement

*The Basic levels (remedial or 0700 levels) of DSP courses are no longer offered at TTU. Students whose ACTs place them into the basic level may be denied admission to TTU until completion of the basic requirements. Requirements may be met by

  1. completion of the basic-level course through a community college from which grades may be transferred to TTU
  2. retaking the ACT and obtaining a score that will place the student into the developmental level or higher
  3. taking the COMPASS placement test and scoring at the developmental level or higher.

** Students whose ACT Reading subscores are 1-11 [or whose SAT Composites are 510 and below] will be denied admission to TTU. Students whose ACT Reading subscores are 12-14 [or whose SAT Composites are 520-700] will be placed on an Admission Decision "Waiting List" pending completion of the COMPASS placement test. Students who score at the developmental level or higher on COMPASS will be admitted to the University, provided that all other Admission requirements have been satisfactorily met. Students who score below the developmental level will be denied admission to TTU pending completion of basic-level requirements and satisfactory evaluation of reapplication to TTU.

Students who wish to challenge the ACT placement will take the Reading Portion of the COMPASS Placement Test.

Evaluation Procedure

The Reading portion of the COMPASS Placement Test measures students' ability to understand what they read. The actual test consists of reading passages in two general categories: referring and reasoning. The questions about the passages are multiple-choice. Students who score below the cut-off norm for the component will be placed in the appropriate Basic (Remedial) or Developmental Reading course(s). The COMPASS reading passages test skills with respect to the following:

  • Identifying word and/or phrase meaning through context
  • Understanding literal and interpretive meaning
  • Understanding the writer's assumptions, opinions, and tone

COMPASS Reading Scores

A COMPASS Reading Score of 1-48 will place the student in the Basic (Remedial) level, DSPR0700 Reading. [DSPR0700 is no longer offered at TTU.]

A COMPASS Reading Score of 49-79 will place the student in the Developmental level, DSPR0800 Reading.

A COMPASS Reading Score greater than 79 will place the student at college level, with no DSP Reading requirement.

A challenge test is given to verify that the COMPASS placement is accurate.

  • The Challenge Test is given on the first day of class.
  • It is a standardized test of reading comprehension and critical reasoning which covers the following types of information:
    • Identifying word and/or phrase meaning through context
    • Understanding literal and interpretive meaning
    • Understanding the writers' assumptions, opinions, and tone
    • Interpreting information
    • Using information appropriately
    • Evaluating information
  • A score in the 85th percentile is required for successful challenge.
  • Test results are discussed individually with students.
