Brahms' Academic Festival Overture in C minor, Op. 80

When the University of Breslau awarded Brahms an honorary doctorate in 1879, the composer had been unable to attend the ceremony. The following year, in recompense and in thanks for the degree, he composed the Academic Festival Overture, conducting the first performance at the University on 4 January 1881.

Based on four German student songs, this exuberant overture uses the largest orchestra that Brahms ever employed.

This recording is performed by the Orchestre National Bordeaux Aquitaine; Alain Lombard, conductor.

Download this work now through September 4th, 2008.
