Getting Started Finding Government Information

The U.S. Government publications housed in the Library are open for use to all citizens. The publications are arranged according to the agency that produced the information. This is referred to as SuDoc Superintendent of Documents) classification. The sources listed below give a SuDoc number within the citation. This is the number you need to find publications in this Library, with the exception of maps. There are several ways to find information, as outlined below.

For a complete listing of materials published since 1976, use the MARCIVE CD-ROM located in the reference area on Level 2 (main level) of the Library. A user guide is available at the Information Desk or you may contact the Government Publications Department office at 372-6105 or 372-3841.

A similar resource, the Catalog of U.S. Government Publications, is available at the GPO Access Web site and covers materials published from 1994 to present.

A few of the more popular collections are located in various parts of the Library.

The following indexes are available behind the Information Desk:

  • Guide to U.S. Government Publications
  • Guide to U.S. Government Statistics
  • Guide to USGS Publications
  • EPA Index (1970-1981)

Additional sources are available on the government index tables located near the Information Desk and the CD-ROM area.  The major sources include:

  • Monthly Catalog of U.S. Government Publications
  • U.S. Congressional Serial Set Catalog
  • American Statistics Index and Abstracts (ASI)
  • Congressional Information Service Annual (CIS)
  • U.S. Government Periodicals Index
  • Publications of the Geological Survey
