The present Volpe Library building opened its doors in June 1989. The three floors of the building contain 105,000 usable square feet.

The Library contains approximately 353,000 books, 27,000 electronic books, over 1.5 million microforms, and subscribes to over 3,050 magazines, journals, and newspapers (in print and electronic).
As a depository for U.S. Government publications, the Library receives materials from various federal agencies, as well as topographic maps from the U.S. Geological Survey. There are over 179,000 bound volumes of government publications and 55,000 maps.
The Media Center, located on the first level, contains over 40,000 titles in various formats such as videocassettes, compact discs, DVDs, and computer software. There are 9 laptops available for students to check out for use in the building.
Historical materials pertaining to the Upper Cumberland Region and Tennessee Tech are located in Regional History and the Archives.
The automated library catalog has replaced the traditional card catalog. An increasing number of online databases offer on-campus and off-campus access to magazines, journals and e-books, many in full text.
Professional staff members are available to assist students in their search for information.
The Volpe Library is regularly open 94 hours per week and keeps extended hours during projects week and final examinations week.
