The department awards teaching assistantships and a research assistantship. To apply for either type of assistantship, please complete the TTU assistantship application form and submit it and your admission application to the TTU Graduate School.
The Department awards nine graduate teaching assistantships each year on a competitive basis. These assistantships include a full tuition and fees waiver (except for the health insurance fee), and a stipend of $7,500 per year. A graduate assistant making satisfactory progress in the master's program can have his/her assistantship renewed for a second year.
Graduate assistants work up to 20 hours a week as a tutor and/or grader during their first year and teach introductory classes during their second year of study. They meet on a regular basis with the Graduate Advisor for discussions about teaching techniques and are required to participate in the weekly departmental Graduate Seminar.
All of the Department's available assistantships are usually awarded to students who enroll in August. The Department does not have a deadline for assistantship applications. However, to assure full consideration for an assistantship beginning in a fall semester, a completed application with all supporting documents should be submitted by January 31. Nevertheless, late applications are welcomed.
A graduate research assistantship is available in the Department of Mathematics for the 2010-11 and 2011-12 academic years The research assistant will participate in Dr. Sabine Le Borne's interdisciplinary research project titled “Algebraic hierarchical matrix preconditioners for two- and three-dimensional saddle point problems." The research focuses on the development (theoretical analysis and practical implementation) of new mathematical tools for the design of efficient iterative solvers for problems arising in Computational Fluid Dynamics. The TTU Graduate School awards Diversity Fellowship that pay tuition, fees, and a stipend. To be eligible for a Diversity Fellowship, applicants must be admitted in full standing to the TTU Graduate School , demonstrate appreciation for and commitment to diversity, and meet at least two of the following criteria.
1. Belong to an underrepresented racial/ethnic minority group (African-Americans/Blacks, Hispanics, American Indians/Alaskan Native, and Pacific Islanders).
2. Be a resident of one of the following educationally underserved/underrepresented Tennessee counties: Bledsoe, Campbell, Cannon, Clay, Cumberland, DeKalb, Fentress, Grundy, Hamilton, Jackson, Macon, Marion, McMinn, Meigs, Monroe, Morgan, Overton, Pickett, Rhea, Scott, Sequatchie, Smith, Trousdale, Van Buren, Warren, White.
3. Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident and belong to an underrepresented/underserved gender in science, technology, engineering, mathematics, business, and nursing
4. Demonstrate character, motivation and ability to succeed in graduate studies based on academic record and a written essay.
