Areas of Concentration

Undergraduate Areas of Concentration

The Mechanical Engineering curriculum includes two 'Areas of Concentration' (AOC) as part of the Undergraduate Program. These areas are (1) Energy Systems, and (2) Mechanical Systems. Within each AOC, four 3-hour technical courses constitute an option. Each student must complete 12 semester hours in an option. The table below lists the different emphases within each AOC. Students should declare an Undergraduate AOC as early as possible to permit planning for a specific graduation date.

Area of Concentration Emphasis
Energy Systems
  1. Aerospace
  2. Heat Transfer/Fluids
  3. Heating, Ventilation, and Air Conditioning (HVAC)
  4. Power Production
  5. MEMS & Nanotechnology
Mechanical Systems
  1. Machine Design & Manufacturing
  2. Systems Dynamics & Controls
  3. Materials Engineering
  4. Engineering Mechanics
  5. MEMS & Nanotechnology
