The following recommendations will guide you in the selection of appropriate material to prepare for your audition.و Please contact the faculty member identified at the end of each listing should you need additional repertoire suggestions.


Flute
Scales: All major scales (three octaves where practical); chromatic scale
Prepared: Two contrasting etudes or two contrasting solo movements to demonstrate tone, technique, and musicianship.

Snare Drum


A prospective percussion major must audition in three areas: snare drum, keyboard percussion and timpani. A drum set audition is preferred, but not required.


Snare Drum:
  • Perform rudiments (Refer to the Percussive Arts Society's Standard 40 Rudiments), one concert/orchestral prepared solo, one rudimental prepared solo and sight- read.
  • Suggested Concert Solos:
    • Any etude from Portraits in Rhythm by Anthony Cirone.
    • Any etude from Douze Etudes by Jacques Delecluse.
    • Three Dances by Warren Benson
    • Six Unaccompanied Snare Drum Solos by Michael Colgrass

  • Suggested Rudimental Solos:
    • Any solo from the 14 Modern Contest Solos by John Pratt.
    • Any solo from The Rudimental Cookbook by Edward Freytag.

Keyboard Percussion:
  • Perform scales (All Major Scales required; Natural Minor, Harmonic Minor and Melodic Minor Preferred), a two-mallet prepared solo, a four-mallet prepared solo and sight-read.
  • Suggested Two-Mallet Solos:
    • Tambourin Chinois by Fritz Kreisler/Arr. By G.H. Green
    • Furioso and Valse in d Minor by Earl Hatch
    • Any etude (pp. 62-93) from Modern School for Xylophone, Marimba, Vibraphone by Morris Goldenberg
  • Suggested Four-Mallet Solos:
    • Yellow After the Rain by Mitchell Peters
    • Meditation and Dance by David Steinquest
    • Any solo (pp. 54-63) from Marimba: Technique Through Music by Mark Ford.
    • Frogs by Keiko Abe.
Timpani:
  • Perform a prepared solo and sight-read.
  • Suggested Solos:
    • Sonata for Timpani by John Beck
    • Any etude from The Solo Timpanist by Vic Firth
    • Three Designs for Three Timpani by Robert Muczynski
Drum Set:
  • You will be asked to perform a variety of styles, such as shuffle, swing, waltz, bossa nove, samba, rock, funk, latin funk as well as a variety of latin-based styles such as cascara, mambo, guaguanco, songo, meringue and bembe. Afro-Cuban Rhythms for Drum Set by Malabe/Weiner can assist you in audition preparation.
  • In addition, you will read a big-band chart to demonstrate your understanding of chart reading. The Jazz Drummer's Reading Workbook by Tom Morgan can assist you in audition preparation.

Violin

Prepared: Two contrasting pieces from the standard piano repertoire (representing two stylistic periods). Selections must be memorized.
Suggested Material: J.S. Bach-any prelude and fugue, Haydn, Mozart or Beethoven-any sonata, Chopin-nocturnes, waltzes, impromptus, or mazurkas, Brahms-Klavierstucke, Debussy-preludes

Prepare:

Music Education Vocal/General Licensure Option: Perform one art song or folk song from memory.
Vocal Performance: Perform two art songs from memory: One song should be in English and one in Italian, German, or French. An accompanist will be provided and the applicant must provide music for the accompanist.
