Music Licensure Information

1. Bachelor of Music students seeking state licensure to teach music pursue an emphasis in one of two areas: Instrumental Licensure (band, orchestra or classroom general music teacher) or Vocal/General Licensure (choral director or classroom general music teacher). The Bachelor of Music degree options in composition, instrumental performance, jazz studies, piano performance, or vocal performance do not meet the requirements for teacher licensure. The current Undergraduate Catalog lists semester-by-semester curricular tabs for both licensure programs.

2. The music licensure major must pass the Praxis I Examination, Academic Skills Assessment [PPST]), before enrolling in upper division professional courses (3000 level courses). The student should take the examination in the Spring Semester of the first year. A student is exempt from the Praxis I requirement if he/she has either an enhanced ACT Composite Score of 22 or a re-centered SAT score of 1020. Registration Forms for the Praxis I Examination are available in 301 Bartoo Hall. Praxis Examination information may be found on the Educational Testing Service website (http://www.ets.org/praxis/index.html).

3. In the Sophomore Year, wind majors should begin wind instrument class within the same family (brass or woodwind) as his/her major instrument.

4. Percussion majors must complete two semesters of instruction in brass instrument class and two semesters of instruction in woodwind instrument class.
