Student Organizations

The following organizations are established within the School of Nursing for students. These organizations, each with a faculty advisor, give students opportunities to develop leadership and participant roles.

TTU Student Nurse Association

The Student Nurse Association (SNA) - TTU's Chapter was organized September 1980 with 79 charter members. The Tennessee Association of Student Nurses (TASN) is for students what the Tennessee Nurses' Association is for professional nurses. The Student Nurse Association assists students to develop a broader view of professional nursing and to participate in state and national student nurse activities. All nursing majors are eligible for membership with dues payable each September. Activities include attendance at the Tennessee Association of Student Nurses' Convention each fall (October/November) and the National Student Nurses' Association (NSNA) Convention each April. The Chapter sponsors a community service project each spring and a fund raiser during the year.

Iota Beta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society in Nursing

The Iota Beta Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) was chartered in 1986. STTI Honor Society is the only honor society for nursing. The STTI focus is on scholarship, the development of new knowledge, and the promotion of research. The purposes are to:

Recognize superior achievement in nursing
Recognize the development of leadership
Foster high professional standards
Encourage creative work
Strengthen the commitment to the ideals of the nursing profession

This International Honor Society has grown dramatically to more than 100,000 members and 221 Chapters throughout the U.S. and Puerto Rico in accredited programs that grant baccalaureate or higher degrees in nursing.

Members are selected from the upper 35% of the graduating class. Seniors with the highest grade point averages in nursing and/or cumulative who demonstrate the characteristics of the organization exemplified in the five purposes will be nominated. (Usually at least 3.2 or above in Nursing and 3.0 cumulative.)

Juniors in the top 15% of their class with the highest cumulative grade point averages who demonstrate the characteristics listed in the five purposes may also be selected.
