Campus and community invited to grand opening of new Nursing and Health Services building

The public is invited to attend the grand opening and ribbon cutting of Tennessee Tech University’s new Nursing and Health Services Building at 10 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 15.

The ceremony will begin in the 282-seat auditorium of the new building, which is located on 7th Street, at the direct opposite end of TTU’s Main Quad from Derryberry Hall.

The facility, which officials refer to as “the gateway between the university and Cookeville’s growing medical district,” will help to double and eventually nearly triple TTU’s nursing student enrollment.

It will also serve as a location for providing continuing education courses to the area’s health care providers, a requirement for maintaining licenses that can currently be met only as near as Nashville or Knoxville.

Some of the state-of-the-art features of the new building will include a $1 million, 60-station computer lab, and three patient care labs that all replicate actual hospital settings: a fundamentals lab for teaching basic nursing skills, a women’s health and pediatrics lab, and a critical care lab.

All incorporate patient simulators that can be programmed to reflect the symptoms of various illnesses.

Because nursing courses center around groups of eight students, classrooms in the new building have been specially designed to accommodate work groups of that size.

The total cost of constructing and furnishing the new building is $24 million. Of that total, state funding provided $15.4 million, federal funding provided $2.5 million, and the remaining $6.1 million was provided by private donations.

While the private donations were beneficial in helping to afford some of the building’s cutting-edge innovations, student tuition and fees were not used to fund any portion of the building costs.
