Ceramics exhibit by Heeseung Lee runs through Feb. 23 at Craft Center

A ceramics exhibit by Philadelphia artist Heeseung Lee opens in Gallery One at the Appalachian Center for Crafts on Friday, Jan. 17.

Entitled "The Sublime and The Mundane: Decorative Functional Ceramics," the show will run through Sunday, Feb. 23.

"I think of my pottery as objects that can be viewed from any and all angles," Lee said. "My pieces are three-dimensional paintings, abstractions of color and texture, stretched on a multi-plane canvas."

The artist’s current work is influenced by personal glimpses of Asian aesthetics, and Lee is interested in the value of functional pieces even before physical handling and implementation.

"I juxtapose the eloquent and the satirical, the organic and the geometric and the sublime and the mundane. As objects, my work embodies the passive, and as functional vessels, my work signifies the active," Lee said.

The Craft Center is located at Hurricane Bridge on Highway 56S, between exit 273 on Interstate 40 and Smithville. The gallery is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day.
