thumb_Diane_MurphyTennessee Tech University's College of Business Board of Trustees 2011 Distinguished Lecture Series welcomes M. Dianne Murphy to campus at 5 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13, to discuss women in leadership.

The presentation by Murphy, a TTU alumna who has served since November 2004 as Columbia University's Director of Intercollegiate Athletics and Physical Education, will be held in the Ervin Auditorium on the first floor of Johnson Hall.

"M. Dianne Murphy is one of a handful of women in the nation to hold the title of athletic director," said James Jordan-Wagner, dean of TTU's College of Business. "She will be speaking about her strategic planning process and how those processes assisted her programs at Columbia University and the University of Denver in earning national recognition and collegiate titles."

During Murphy's time as athletic director at Columbia, she has led many initiatives aimed at improving the experience of the university's student-athletes.

She came to Columbia after serving for six years as director of athletics and recreation at the University of Denver. Under Murphy's leadership there, eight Denver sports programs made NCAA tournament appearances, and Denver teams won national titles on four occasions.

At Columbia, she has undertaken a complete strategic planning process aimed at both short- and long-term excellence in athletics. The impact of this planning has resulted in numerous Ivy League successes and university records being broken.

"In short, Murphy has presided over one of the most successful periods in Columbia athletics history," Jordan-Wagner said.

Murphy's presentation is the second of four in the Distinguished Lecture Series. The two final presentations are set for September.

Each presentation is free and open to the public.
