Craft Center exhibit takes playful look at toys
“Boys Toys,” an artwork series focused on the examination of the ideas of childhood and play, remains on display at the Appalachian Center for Craft through March 10. Artist Nathan Dube’s exhibition explores how the adult male identity is constructed in contemporary culture.
“My work uses childhood pranks and toys re-interpreted as high-end adult toys,” Dube said. “For instance, the piece entitled S.N.I.P.E.R., which functions as a spit-wad shooter, is exquisitely crafted and constructed of precious materials as opposed to its traditional drinking straw. These eccentric toys are meant to comment on the absurd lengths men will sometimes go to in order to recapture their youth.”
Dube received his master’s degree in jewelry and metalsmithing at Kent State University and his bachelor’s of fine arts in studio arts from the University of Texas at Austin. His work has been exhibited extensively throughout the United States and has been featured in several books and publications.
The Appalachian Center for Craft is located approximately six miles from Interstate 40 at Exit 273 (Smithville/McMinnville). Go south on Highway 56; turn left immediately after crossing Hurricane Bridge. This drive leads to the Craft Center.
