thumb RyanPateTennessee Tech University student Ryan Pate will hold his senior bachelor of fine arts exhibition Wednesday, March 28, through Sunday, April 1, at the Appalachian Center for Craft.

Pate’s ceramic pieces tend to be large, decorative and functional. He finds inspiration in Classical architecture, especially Roman and Egyptian columns and Greek storage vessels.

He fires his work in kilns whose atmosphere includes wood, salt and soda, which serve to add color, depth and texture to his pieces.

“Watching the flames carry these materials along the kiln’s flame path and seeing them accumulate on the clay and glaze surfaces is such a spontaneous process,” he said. “It’s very exciting.”

Before coming to TTU, Pate earned an associate degree in science with an emphasis in art from Chattanooga State Community College.

There will be an artist reception from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. April 1 at the Craft Center.

The Appalachian Center for Craft is conveniently located approximately six miles from Interstate 40 at Exit 273 (Smithville/McMinnville). Go south on Hwy. 56; turn left immediately after crossing Hurricane Bridge. This drive leads to the Craft Center.
