Cumberland Quintet offers evening of chamber music on April 5

COOKEVILLE, Tenn. (March 31, 2011)—Join members of the Cumberland Quintet for an evening of beautiful chamber music, featuring a variety of musical styles and instrumentation. The concert, on Tuesday, April 5, at 7:30 p.m., is free and open to the public, and will be held at Tennessee Tech University in Wattenbarger Auditorium in the Bryan Fine Arts Building.
"We are really looking forward to performing a concert which allows us to explore different combinations of instruments in such a wide array of styles," Roger Martin, flutist in the group, said.
The "London Trios" were written by Franz Joseph Haydn while he was visiting England. He composed them as a hostess gift for a visit with some of his London patrons, Lord Abingdon and Sir Walter Aston, who were both amateur flutists.
While the original version is written for two flutes and cello, members of the Cumberland Quintet will perform a version for flute, oboe and bassoon. This trio from the Classical Period is followed by a 20th Century woodwind quartet by Czech composer, Leoš Janáček, a delightful piece for flute, oboe, bassoon and piano by Baroque composer, Georg Philipp Telemann, a duet for flute and horn by American composer, Jan Bach, and an exciting arrangement of Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsody for woodwind quartet.
