EDITOR'S NOTE: This event has been cancelled due to illness.

Join the Cumberland Quintet for an evening of beautiful chamber music featuring composers from around the globe.

The concert, on Tuesday, April 6, at 7:30 p.m., is free and open to the public, and will be held at Tennessee Technological University in Wattenbarger Auditorium in the Bryan Fine Arts Building.

The group will perform "Petite Offrande Musicale," by Italian composer Nino Rota. Rota is best known for his film scores, including "The Godfather." Also on the program is an excitingly rhythmic quintet entitled "Sechs Bagatellen," by Romanian-born composer Gyorgy Ligeti. Ligeti composed a wide variety of music, but is also best known for his compositions used in films, including "2001: A Space Odyssey," "The Shining," and "Eyes Wide Shut."

The quintet, "Homage to Bartok," is a relatively new work by American composer Katherine Hoover. Of the many marvelous aspects found in Bartok's compositions, two in particular influenced this piece: use of short, angular themes and folk music elements.

Also on the program is a quintet by French composer Claude Arrieu. While Arrieu entered the French Conservatory in 1924 with dreams of being a piano virtuoso, she soon found her voice as a composer. Like Rota and Ligeti, she wrote many types of music, including music for French films and radio programs.

Established in 1972, the Cumberland Quintet has built a solid reputation for unique programming and fine musicianship. In residence at TTU, the group has toured extensively throughout the United States and in Europe, performing to a wide variety of audiences. Commanding a large repertoire of music from all periods, they offer the standard woodwind classics as well as exciting modern works and lighter popular music.

With the 2009-2010 season, the quintet marks its 37th year as an ensemble. Current members of the Cumberland Quintet are Roger Martin, flute; William Woodworth, oboe; Anne Thurmond, clarinet; James Lotz, bassoon; and Jeremy Hansen, horn.

Special concerts and workshops for young audiences serve to introduce the instruments and to provide advice for the young musicians. The Cumberland Quintet serves on the faculty of the Southeast Chamber Music Institute. The ensemble has performed on live radio and television broadcasts, and has been part of an educational public television series that has been distributed to several Southeastern states. They have also performed as guest artists at music conventions for the College Music Society, the National Flute Association, Tennessee Music Educators Association, and the Midwest International Band and Orchestra Clinic. Albany Records released their fourth CD, “Into the Blue,” in 2006.
