Dolores Nichols Scholarship Announced at TTU First Scholarship Endowed Under Bell Administration

Dolores Nichols' legacy -- her love of books and her devotion to the region's libraries -- has been honored with a new scholarship at Tennessee Technological University established in her memory by her husband, Earl Nichols.

As the first scholarship endowed under the leadership of TTU President Robert (Bob) Bell, the Dolores D. Nichols Memorial Scholarship has been established for graduate students majoring in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in library science.

Mrs. Nichols spent almost 40 years working with libraries, serving 34 of those years as assistant director of the Upper Cumberland Regional Library. She contributed to the expansion of public library services and improved literacy and adult education in the region.

Her vast participation in state and local public service included her work with the Tennessee Association for Family and Community Education, where she served as family life and global chairperson. She also earned the Tennessee Extension Homemakers Council Certificate for Outstanding Leadership and held offices in state and regional library associations.

In 1992, the Nichols endowed the Leonard Dunavin Mathematics Scholarship at TTU in honor of her father. Dunavin, who graduated and earned the university's first math medal in 1922, was a strong supporter of TTU.

Mrs. Nichols graduated in 1957 with a bachelor's degree in home economics from TTU. In 1959, her husband earned the first master's degree awarded at the university, receiving a master's in education administration. Mr. Nichols continues the couple's tradition of supporting TTU athletics.

The $10,000 endowment will fund annual $500 scholarships for a prospective or current student in good standing with the university pursuing a graduate degree in curriculum and instruction with a concentration in library science. Preference will be given to students from the Upper Cumberland area.
