Retired and much-admired Tennessee Tech University professor Johnny J. Miller has been helping students for many years, initially as a teacher, wrestling coach and now with a scholarship endowment in honor of his late wife, Dorothy “Dot” Miller, also a teacher.

“This scholarship would be for a student who carries a 3.5 GPA, with a desire to be a good physical educator and who really needs some financial help getting there,” said Miller, who was on campus Monday to finalize plans for the endowment.

Miller retired from the Department of Exercise Science, Physical Education & Wellness in 1992 after more than 20 years of service. Since then, he has continued to be involved in the lives of TTU students by providing financial assistance informally. His wife, who died in 2005, was a teacher for 40 years.

“I’ve been helping three or four students on my own. That’s the way we’ve always done things in this department,” Miller said. Now, he said, he hopes to help even more students in the future with the endowment.

The Johnny and Dorothy “Dot” Miller Endowment will fund scholarships for physical education students, with priority being given to those students interested in coaching wrestling.

“Johnny Miller has been helping Tennessee Tech students for many years and has a legacy in making sure students have every opportunity to succeed,” stated J. Mark Hutchins, vice president for university advancement.  “We are so honored that he has chosen to continue his support for years to come through this endowment.  We are also pleased that we can recognize the student-centered service that both his wife and he have provided during their lifetimes in such a meaningful way.”
