They offer classes for all skill levels in blacksmithing, clay, fibers, glass, metals and wood. The summer workshop lineup includes weekend, week-long and intensive classes.

“With the variety of classes we offer during the summer workshop season, there is a class for virtually everyone,” said Beth Smith, marketing and program manager. “We offer classes for the true beginner to the studio professional and have a great summer faculty of professional craft artists visiting from all over the country to teach these workshops.”

A sampling of the nearly 50 different workshops available at the Craft Center this summer include: blacksmithing, knife making, tool making, clay handbuilding, functional and sculptural ceramics, papermaking, glass blowing, stained glass, glass bead making, jewelry making, furniture making and woodturning, just to name a few.

“People come from all over the country to the Appalachian Center for Craft each summer to immerse themselves in this wonderfully creative environment, not to mention to enjoy the gorgeous surroundings of Center Hill Lake,” said Smith. “Our workshop participants love the studio work, hiking the trails, and swimming in the lake – it’s truly a unique and relaxing learning experience.”

“We also offer a 50 percent discount of the workshop fee to Tennessee Tech employees and students,” she said. “Plus, what a great way to earn college credit! Students can get one hour of elective credit for a week-long class and three hours of credit for an intensive workshop.”

In addition to the discounts offered to TTU employees and students, anyone older than 55 is eligible for a 10 percent discount off the workshop fees if they notify the Craft Center of their age when they register. Lodging and meals are available to participants during the summer season, though space is limited.
