Evelyn Chambers named TTU’s 2012 Outstanding Professional

For being an invaluable constant amid change, as well as a reliable expert in her field, Evelyn Chambers has been named Tennessee Tech University's 2012 Outstanding Professional.
As assistant director of TTU's Human Resources, Chambers is the main quality control point for employee systems, data and budget. She has been instrumental in many key initiatives: upgrades of database management software, online job posting systems, and new compensation plans.
Her service to the university was especially critical when she assumed a leadership role when the director's position was vacant. Mike Cowan, TTU's Human Resources director, says her ideas and honest feedback were instrumental when he arrived.
"I credit Evelyn with leading HR through a very difficult time period," said Cowan. "Evelyn is one of the most committed and reliable employees that I have ever known."
Chambers' signature accomplishments involved implementing Banner, the administrative computing system that allows the university to manage critical information in an enterprise-wide database. She was the Human Resources lead for Banner conversion and continues to guide new upgrades related to software, hardware and technology.
"Think of it from this perspective, Evelyn had a direct impact on every employee of the university," said Jeff Young, associate vice president for Business and Fiscal Affairs.
Kurt Eisen, associate dean of the College of Arts and Sciences, says Chambers is an effective liaison among Human Resources, the Business Office and Academic Affairs.
"Her deep institutional memory helps generate solutions quickly and efficiently," said Eisen.
Libby Gays, TTU payroll and benefits manager, says Chambers is the kind of person everyone wants as a co-worker.
"Evelyn is dependable, discrete, likable, loyal, honest, enthusiastic and realistic in her expectations," said Gays.
She joined TTU in 1987, serving as an account clerk for the College of Business. She moved to the Human Resources Department in 1995 as a personnel assistant, then took on the role of employment manager in 1998. She has served as assistant director/analyst since 2000.
A member of the Society for Human Resource Management, Chambers participated in numerous program introductions including a new applicant tracking system (People Admin), Salary Planner, and spreadsheets for appointing adjunct faculty and the standardization of graduate assistants' work schedules and pay.
Chambers earned her bachelor's degree in business administration from the University of Tennessee, Knoxville.
