Grammy winning Chestnut Brass Co. to perform on Feb. 25

The Grammy award-winning Chestnut Brass Co. will be in concert at Tennessee Tech University’s Wattenbarger Auditorium at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 25.

A review by the Roanoke Times and World News describes the group as “a truly world-class brass ensemble” in its ability to present works spanning five centuries of brass literature.

“The group switched back and forth on historical and modern instruments — 35 total — and (the members’) ability to stay in tune and harmonize while keeping the individual instruments distinct staggered the imagination,” said a review in the Oak Ridger newspaper.

Founded in 1977, the ensemble began performing as street musicians in Philadelphia before going on to win a Grammy for their versatility in recording the “best crossover classical CD” featuring styles ranging from the Baroque trumpet to the blues trombone.

Members are Bruce Barrie and John Thomas, trumpet; Marian Hesse, horn; Larry Zimmerman, trombone; and Jay Krush, tuba.

A Center Stage event, the TTU concert is free and open to the public. For more information, call TTU’s Center Stage Office at 931/372-3637.
