  • A TTU faculty ensemble will perform every night that week in free concerts in the Wattenbarger Auditorium of the Bryan Fine Arts Building.

More than 70 high school musicians will perform in small ensembles with the oversight of Tennessee Tech University’s award-winning faculty at the Southeast Chamber Music Institute from Sunday, May 27, until Friday, June 1.

“This is a wonderful opportunity for students to play in small groups with only one person per part,” said Joshua Hauser, institute director and TTU trombone professor. “That is something they don’t often get in their high school music programs.”

Students will receive instruction from TTU’s string, wind and percussion faculty, and a different faculty ensemble will perform every night. The Summer Evenings of Chamber Music concert series is free and open to the public. Performances begin at 7:30 p.m. in Wattenbarger Auditorium in the Bryan Fine Arts Building on campus.

On Monday, the Cumberland Quintet will perform some of its favorite original quintets and arrangements, including pieces by Louis Armstrong, Antonin Dvorak and Paquito D’Rivera. The ensemble is comprised of Roger Martin, flute; Wonkak Kim, clarinet; William Woodworth, oboe; James Lotz, bassoon and Jeremy Hansen, horn.

The Brass Arts Quintet on Tuesday will present works featuring members of the group as soloists in front of the ensemble. Members are Charles Decker and Chris McCormick, trumpet; Greg Danner, horn; Hauser on trombone and R. Winston Morris on tuba. They will perform works by Fisher Tull, Herbert L. Clarke, Henry Filmore and the rock band Chicago.

Faculty Strings, comprised of violinist Wei Tsun Chang, violist Idalynn Besser, cellist Dan Allcott and bassist Steve Benne, will perform on Wednesday.

Phil Barham, saxophone; Chris McCormick, trumpet; Hauser; Fred Kennedy, piano; Sarah Ransom, bass and Eric Willie on drums will perform an array of jazz favorites at Thursday’s TTU Faculty Jazz Combo concert.

Institute students will perform at 10 a.m. and again at 1:15 p.m. Friday, June 1, also in Wattenbarger.
