The jazz pianist that the U.S. government has sponsored to tour China, India and Brazil is coming to Tennessee Tech University.

Judy Carmichael, internationally acclaimed stride and swing pianist, will perform in TTU’s Wattenbarger Auditorium Oct. 16.

Carmichael is one of a handful of musicians to approach jazz from the perspective of its entire history.

She was the first jazz musician sponsored by the U.S. government to perform in China and has toured for the U.S. Information Agency across India, Portugal and Brazil. She was the first musician to give a concert in Venice’s Peggy Guggenheim Museum and has given private concerts for Bill Clinton, Rod Stewart and Robert Redford.

The Grammy-nominated pianist will perform at 7:30 p.m. Wattenbarger Auditorium is in the Bryan Fine Arts Building on campus, 1150 N. Dixie Ave. The concert is free and open to the public.
