Kingsport's Susan Haas Crowned Miss TTU

As a contestant for the title of Miss TTU, Susan Haas sang "This is the Moment" from the musical "Jekyll and Hyde" for the talent competition of the contest on Saturday, Nov. 18, at Derryberry Hall Auditorium. As it turned out, she was right. It was Haas' moment: she was named Miss TTU later that evening in Tennessee Technological University's annual scholarship pageant.

Beth Bilbrey, a freshman physical therapy major from Lafayette, was named both Miss Congeniality and first runner-up. Karla Hannah, a senior elementary education major from Chattanooga, was declared second runner-up.

Haas, a senior majoring in chemical engineering, is no stranger to being on stage. She sings with the Tennessee Tech choir, dances, plays piano and takes voice lessons. She attends the university on a partial vocal scholarship. When she competes for the title of 1996 Miss Tennessee, she will also sing.

Haas is the daughter of Don and Nancy Haas of Kingsport.

For her platform, Haas chose the theme "Preparing Students for the Twenty-First Century Workplace." During her interview, she suggested that having more business people visit classrooms and increasing the number of computer classes would be a first step towards exposing students to the many occupations and work environments from which to choose.

The judges for the event were Phillip Gibson of WGSQ-FM, Bill Greer of WXVL-FM, Barry Ledbetter of WKVX-TV, Kristie Phillips of the Putnam Morning Light and Laura Pritchard Whiteaker of KPMG-Peat Marwick Accounting.

Becky Magura, director of educational services at WCTE-TV and winner of the university's Outstanding Young Alumnus Award, joined Lee Wray, annual fund coordinator for the university's office of Alumni and Development to host the evening's ceremonies.

Haas, a member of Kappa Delta sorority, received a $2,000 scholarship along with gifts from a number of local businesses. She was officially crowned by Candace Clifft, the 1995 Miss TTU.

The pageant included swimsuit and evening gown competitions in addition to the talent section, off-stage interview and on-stage question-and-answer session. Clifft provided entertainment between segments, along with Richard Cox, Jennifer Evans and Tracy Landrum. Kim Holloway, assistant director of student activities, served as director and coordinator for the pageant.
