thumb_book_driveThis month, TTU's University Service Center will be collecting new and gently used children's books. A collection tub will be outside RUC-108 all month. But students, faculty, staff, student organizations, and class groups are encouraged to coordinate their own children's book collection with drop off locations throughout campus as well.

"My message to every campus group is coordinate your own project, share it with the Service Center staff and we will help you in any way possible," said Michelle Huddleston, center director. "If different groups on campus are doing different projects, that is a really exciting thing and worth sharing with each other. I would like to run on our website what each group has decided to do this month."

On Saturday, Oct. 23, the community will be invited to bring books to campus for National Make a Difference Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. A drive-through location will be staffed on the corner of Dixie Avenue and Ninth Street in front of New Hall South.

This year the focus will be on Early Childhood Development in Putnam County. Because the Pre-K program is based on low household incomes, the children in these programs are considered educationally "at risk."

"The books we collect will be taken into these classrooms for the children to take home with them," said Huddleston. "What is left over will be distributed to the teachers to have in their rooms."

The last week of the month a team of TTU students will go into the classrooms to deliver these books and to spend a little time in each room reading to the kids and just being a positive influence for them.
