Marketing Club at TTU is best in Southern Region and advised by Faculty Adviser of the YearThey're the best in the entire Southern U.S. and runner-up in the world Ð and they're advised by the Faculty Adviser of the Year, an international honor.
"They" are members of Tennessee Technological University's Marketing Club, which brought home top honors for the South at the recent International Collegiate Conference of the American Marketing Association, beating out much larger universities such as the University of Tennessee-Knoxville. The TTU Marketing Club was also named runner-up for International Collegiate Chapter of the Year.
In addition to chapter awards, Karl Mann, Marketing Club adviser and TTU professor of Marketing, was rewarded for his hard work and dedication by being named the Hugh G. Wales Adviser for 1999-2000 Ð an honor that recognizes the best adviser from all collegiate AMA chapters in the U.S. and the world. He has been at TTU for 12 years.
"A school our size doesn't usually achieve such recognition, but our students worked very hard this year and deserve being named top Southern Regional chapter," Mann said. "This is quite a feather-in-our-cap for Tennessee Tech."
The American Marketing Association (AMA) is the world's largest and most comprehensive professional society of marketers, consisting of more than 45,000 worldwide members in 92 countries and 500 chapters throughout North America.
Not only did TTU win top honors for the Southern Region, but the university took home "Most Educational Exhibit" honors as well and also won a $500 community service award for its participation in such civic activities as Toys for Tots, sponsoring Firefighter Appreciation Day, helping renovate a Cookeville playground and donating time in designing web pages for area businesses.
"When I became adviser for the club six years ago, we were on suspension from the AMA because of low membership," Mann explained. "We have really, really just come back. I knew we were a good chapter, but I didn't know we were this good. This is just such an outstanding honor for a school our size."
Mann credits senior Angela McCarty from Oak Ridge, who served president this past year, for helping turn the TTU Marketing Club chapter into an award-winning chapter, as well as the hard work of the other approximate 80 members."These awards say a lot about the individuals in the club," Mann said. "We are a very much improved chapter because of their hard work."
