Math Club celebrates Pi Day, helps Haiti recovery effort
TTU Math Club members celebrated annual Pi Day by giving math instructor Sam Narimetla a pie in the face.
It was all in good fun and helped raise donations for Haiti earthquake victims.
Pi Day, which falls on 3/14, celebrates the Greek letter pi, symbol for the ratio of the circumference of a circle to its diameter. It is also a transcendental number, with a decimal expansion that continues infinitely without repeating.
The Math club decided to celebrate Pi day by placing money-collection cans in the departmental office, each labeled with the name of one of eight participating math professors. The can (and professor) with the most money was “pied” in the face. A total of $290 was raised.
Narimetla donned protective equipment for the “pieing” outside Bruner Hall.
“He was a great sport about it,” said Amy Chambers, assistant math professor.
