Piano recital by TTU's Paul Thurmond will be presented on Aug. 26

The Tennessee Technological University Department of Music and Art will present Paul Thurmond in a Faculty Piano Recital at 7:30 pm on Tuesday, August 26, 2008.

This free concert will be held in Wattenbarger Auditorium on the campus of Tennessee Technological University.

Thurmond has been an Adjunct Professor of Music at Tech for seven years, and plays piano for faculty and student recitals, the Tech Chorale, and the Bryan Symphony. He is also Music Director and Organist at First Presbyterian Church.

“I enjoy the opportunity to play works for solo piano,” says Thurmond. “That’s a chance I don’t have very often, and there are so many great pieces to choose from.”

The recital will open with the well-known Harmonious Blacksmith variations by George Friderick Handel, followed by Ludwig van Beethoven’s Sonata No. 23, the Appassionata. "Beethoven considered this to be among his best piano works," Thurmond said.

Next will be three pieces from Miroirs by Maurice Ravel, which demonstrate Ravel’s mastery of keyboard writing. Aram Khachaturian’s brilliant Toccata will close the recital.
