Tennessee Tech University’s Appalachian Center for Craft offers evening classes in ceramics beginning Monday, Jan. 25 and Tuesday, Jan. 26. The workshops run one night a week from 6 to 9 p.m., for eight weeks.

On Monday evenings, Jan. 25-March 22, enjoy Functional Handbuilding with instructor Melody Tiemann. This class is appropriate for all skill levels, from the beginning to advanced students. The eight-week class will cover a variety of functional forms for use in daily life. Students will explore the processes of slab, pinch and coil construction and develop their own unique pieces. The class includes working with low-fire terracotta clay and surface design techniques. Participants will take home their finished glazed and fired work at the end of the course.

The Tuesday evening class, Beginning Wheel Throwing, also taught by Tiemann, focuses on helping beginners become comfortable with the processes of throwing on the potter’s wheel. The goal is for students to be able to successfully throw 6” tall vases and vessels and 6” wide bowls by the end of the course. Participants will learn to glaze their creations and the instructor will fire the work in the gas kiln.

“The eight-week evening class format provides participants an extended, instructional studio experience with an excellent and patient instructor,” said Andre Ballard, the Craft Center’s new workshop and event coordinator.

Tiemann is in her third year as the artist in residence for the Craft Center’s clay studio. She received her master’s degree of fine arts from the University of Mississippi, has taught numerous workshops and university courses, and her work is exhibited nationally.

“In addition to the evening workshops starting in January, we are now taking reservations for all of the studio workshops offered by the Craft Center throughout 2010,” Ballard concluded.
