Schedule Memorial Gym events by March 1 to avoid renovation woes

Planning a pool party, basketball game or other event at Tennessee Tech University’s Memorial Gym between now and Jan. 15, 2009?

To guarantee the facility’s availability during a planned electrical system replacement, dates for the coming year need to be reserved no later than March 1, officials say.

“During the renovation project, the facility’s availability may not be at the level the public is accustomed to, and we want to make people aware of that,” said Larry Wheaton, TTU facilities engineer.

“At the same time, we’re going to try our best to plan around any scheduled events that we know about in advance, but without enough prior notification, there’s a chance we won’t be able to accommodate every single event,” he continued.

The exercise science, physical education and wellness department is also currently developing class and camp listings to help the contractors establish a work schedule.

“Once this schedule is incorporated into the construction documents, the building will be closed to the public for construction,” Wheaton said.

Vreeland Engineers Inc. is the designer of the specifications and drawings for the project, and once their plans are completed, the project will be bid for a contractor to complete the work.

Most of the work is expected to take place this summer, but some parts of the project will continue into next fall semester and require the electricians to work at night, he said.
