School Violence, Litigation Focus of School Law Seminar April 2 at TTU

Area educators will have the opportunity to discuss issues of school violence and current education-related litigation with experts in the field at Tennessee Technological University's 22nd Annual School Law Seminar. The event takes place from 3 to 9 p.m., Tuesday, April 2, in the University Center Multipurpose Room on the university's campus in Cookeville.

Bryan McCarty, staff attorney with the Tennessee Education Association, will discuss current litigation and cases pending that have the potential to affect Tennessee's primary and secondary schools. Ray Holt, legislative liaison with the Tennessee Department of Education, will provide an update about General Assembly activities. James Monroe, member of the Tennessee School Board's Committee on School Violence and assistant superintendent for Hamilton County Schools, will explore ways to cope with school violence, student misconduct and disruptive behaviors.

Other speakers include Joyce Hayes, regional director of the Tennessee Department of Education; Charles Mitchell, chair of the Upper Cumberland Superintendents' Study Council; Jim Greeson, president of the Cookeville-area Phi Delta Kappa chapter; Larry Peach and Thomas Reddick, faculty with Tennessee Tech's Department of School Services Personnel and Psychology; and Susan Elkins, director of the Division of Extended Education at Tennessee Tech. Karen Adams, dean of the university's College of Education, will welcome participants.

Educators may attend the seminar for graduate or undergraduate credit or non-credit inservice recognition (cost varies accordingly). The seminar includes dinner, and credit course assignments will be given after the closing remarks at 8:30 p.m.
