Tennessee Tech, Roane State expand education program for PreK-3 teachers

PracticumTennessee Tech University and Roane State Community College have expanded their 2+2 programs for teacher certification to include an option for those who want to teach in PreK-3 programs.

In the TTU College of Education’s 2+2 program, students complete an associate’s degree in two years at Roane State. A second two years of study lead to a bachelor’s degree from TTU, with students attending classes taught by TTU professors at Roane State.

TTU and Roane State have offered a 2+2 program to certify K-6 teachers since 2006, and nearly 500 teachers have earned their bachelor’s degrees and obtained a teaching license since the program began.

“With a continued focus on early childhood education at the national level, this new program offers the opportunity for Tennessee Tech students to receive training to better prepare them for employment working with young children in private or public facilities,” said TTU associate professor Buddy Martin, who teaches at Roane State.

TTU began offering the PreK-3 program this fall on Roane State’s Oak Ridge campus. The PreK-3 program is similar to the existing K-6 program, in that classes are offered on site or, in certain instances, online, with instruction delivered by TTU professors.  The PreK-3 program is designed for teacher candidates interested in obtaining licensure.

“We are excited about the opportunity this partnership will provide to our students and the positive benefits it will have on early childhood education in our communities,” said Diane Ward, vice president for student learning at Roane State.

Tennessee Tech offers the 2+2 program for K-6 licensure on all Roane State campuses, as well as at Pellissippi State Community College, Chattanooga State Community College, and Motlow State Community College in McMinnville and Tullahoma. All are part of the Tennessee Board of Regents.
