This year's Octubafest introduces new scholarship in memory of James GarrettIt recognizes the talent of a current Tennessee Tech University music student while paying tribute to the memory of a former.
The James Allen Garrett Memorial Scholarship Endowment Award will be presented for the first time ever at this year’s Octubafest celebration, during a special memorial concert set for 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 31.
“Jim Garrett was certainly one of the most outstanding graduates ever to attend TTU,” said R. Winston Morris, music professor and director of the Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble. “He was internationally recognized as a leader in music education, composition and arrangement.”
“Since his death in 1998, a number of people have worked very hard to establish this fully endowed annual scholarship in his memory to be offered to an outstanding music student every fall, and we are pleased to announce that, for the first time ever, a recipient has been selected to receive this prestigious honor,” Morris continued.
That student is Benjamin Michael McMillan of Cookeville, a junior music major at TTU and son of Bob and Peggy McMillan.
Following a TTTE performance of Garrett’s “Embrasse Moi” — in which McMillan will be featured in a euphonium solo — at the Sunday tribute concert, TTU Music and Art Chairperson Jonathan Good will present him with the scholarship.
Two former students of Garrett, Timothy Northcut and William Hunley, will be the show’s other featured soloists.
Northcut, accompanied by Alex Thio on piano, will present Garrett’s “Sonata For Tuba and Piano,” and Hunley will be featured on euphonium in a performance of “Londonderry Air,” a traditional piece arranged by Garrett.
The tribute concert and scholarship presentation is one of 20 programs, which include student recitals and guest artist performances, scheduled for this year’s Octubafest, running Oct. 24 – 31. All shows are free and open to the public.
