Trumpeter Marvin Perry to perform at TTU April 23
The band’s performance is set for 7:30 p.m. in the Wattenbarger Auditorium of the Bryan Fine Arts Building. The TTU Center Stage series funds his appearance, which is free and open to the public.
With his virtuoso performance of the “Concerto for Trumpet” by Russian composer Alexander Arutunian, Perry joins the list of prominent soloists who have performed with the TTU Symphonic Band under the baton of Joseph Hermann. As an encore, Perry joins Charles Decker, trumpet professor, and Chris McCormick, director of jazz studies, for the popular trio “Bugler’s Holiday” by Boston Pops Orchestra composer and arranger Leroy Anderson.
Perry was appointed first trumpet of the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra in 1975 and remained so until 2009. His long tenure as principal trumpeter with a major symphony places him in the forefront of the orchestral world as one of the outstanding trumpet performers of today.
Prior to joining the Indianapolis Symphony, he was a member and soloist of the U.S. Army Band in Washington, D.C., and the Birmingham Symphony. Perry has performed with the Rochester Philharmonic Orchestra and recorded on the CRI and Vox labels with the famous Eastman Wind Ensemble and Eastman Brass Ensemble.
Born and raised in Birmingham, Ala., Perry holds degrees from the prestigious conservatory Eastman School of Music and the University of Montevallo, which honored him with the President's Alumnus Award for outstanding achievement in the performing arts.
Perry currently teaches at Grace College and is a former faculty member at Butler University, University of Indianapolis, Indiana University and DePauw University.
