TTU ag students dominate national academic honor society
What’s more, TTU has had more of its students (10 so far) than any other university serve as president of the 41-year-old organization. The most was Holly Morgan who served as president for the 2009-10 academic year.
Elected as officers for the 2010-11 academic year are:
- National Vice President, East Region: Terra Kimes, a junior agricultural communications and animal science major from Celina;
- National secretary: Kristine Ely, a senior animal science/pre-veterinary major from Chicago; and
- National parliamentarian: Joseph Summers, a senior agricultural engineering technology and animal science major from Chattanooga.
The elections occurred during Delta Tau Alpha’s annual national convention held March 25-27 at Sam Houston State University in Huntsville, Texas.
Animal science professor Bruce Greene, one of two faculty advisors for the TTU chapter along with Jim Baier, will end his six-year stint as the organization’s national treasurer at the end of the current academic year. Greene said retired TTU professor Larry Click, who served as the local chapter advisor for many years, was the driving force behind TTU’s having so many Delta Tau Alpha presidents.
“The national meeting gives the academic cream of the crop an opportunity to visit with the cream of the crop of all these other universities in other parts of the country. It’s amazing to see how they interact and what they learn from each other…It’s also a great organization to help develop leadership,” Greene said.
TTU swept the quiz bowl in a double-elimination tournament, correctly answering questions that delved into all aspects of agriculture, from animal and soil sciences to economics.
Competing on the quiz bowl against 13 other universities were:
- Laura Vaught, a senior animal science major from Lascassas;
- Jonathan Moss, a senior agribusiness management major from Baxter; and
- Summers.
Next year’s national conference will be held at Middle Tennessee State University in Murfreesboro.
Delta Tau Alpha promotes and recognizes scholarship and leadership accomplishments of agricultural students while emphasizing character development, enhancing undergraduate preparation for professional positions, and joining with other agricultural student's organizations in the promotion of agriculture.
