Steward will give a short lecture and perform two pieces by avant garde composer John Cage at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5.

“I’m pretty excited to be back at Tech to perform, as it has been quite a while,” Steward said. “I have lots of memories of performing at Tech as an undergrad, so I think it will be very gratifying to be back performing as a professional musician.”

The lecture component of the performance will introduce the audience to the philosophies behind Cage’s work, which can be difficult for an audience to understand and appreciate, according to Steward. One of the pieces, “Indeterminacy,” is composed of 60 one-minute stories taken from Cage’s life. Layered behind the piece will be one of Steward’s original recordings to give the stories ambient background music. The other piece will be Cage’s “One4” for solo percussion.

After graduating from TTU, Steward went on to get a master’s degree from the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. Since then, he has performed across the country with several orchestras and ensembles. He recently began recording an interview-based podcast with other professional musicians to help guide recent graduates as they begin and build their careers.

While at TTU, Steward was a member of the Bryan Symphony Orchestra for four years. He won the Joan Derryberry Award concerto competition in 1999.

He is a freelance musician in North Carolina. Under an Arts in Education grant from The Arts Council of Winston-Salem and Forsyth County, he will teach master classes and percussion clinics to middle and high school students.

The concert is free and open to the public. Wattenbarger Auditorium is located in the Bryan Fine Arts building at 1150 N. Dixie Avenue.
