Winter is a popular time for music and art events at Tennessee Tech University, especially at the Joan Derryberry Art Gallery. Artists Mary Frances Gaynier and Jack Girard are scheduled to discuss their showcased works at 4:30 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 11, and Wednesday, Feb. 17, respectively.
Gaynier began experimenting with cut paper in 2001 and has been accepted into more than 60-juried national and international exhibitions, in which she has won awards for her work. She received a bachelor of fine arts degree from the University of Toledo in 1989, and she currently resides and works in Toledo, Ohio.
Gaynier’s work is often compared to Scherrenschnitte (scissors cutting), a traditional German art form where paper is cut with scissors into intricate, delicate folk art designs. Her exhibit will show until Friday, Feb. 12.
Girard is currently a professor of art, and the fine arts division chairperson at Transylvania University, in Lexington, Ky. He received his bachelor’s and master’s of fine arts degrees from East Carolina University.
Girard’s primary medium is collage, although he frequently works in paint, assemblage and installation. His work has been included in more than 300 exhibitions. His exhibit will run from Feb. 16 to March 20.
All gallery talks are free and refreshments are offered.
