TTU arts roundup for March 2: Concert rocks Backdoor Playhouse

Tennessee Tech University’s Backdoor Playhouse hosts an evening of women’s alternative-country music Thursday, March 4, as part of a series of campuswide celebrations of National Women’s History Month.

The concert, featuring Jill Andrews and Those Darlins, is scheduled for 8 p.m. At 4 p.m. the same day, there will be an opportunity for students to speak with Kelley Darlin, bassist for Those Darlins, about the music industry and her project, the Southern Girls Rock & Roll Camp.

The free concert is open to the public with priority seating for TTU students. It is sponsored by WTTU 88.5 FM , the TTU Women’s Center, Center Stage and Tech Players.

Appalachian Center for Craft

  • “Boys Toys,” mixed media/metals installation by Nathan Dube, continues until March 10, North Windows Gallery.
  • The Bachelor of Fine Arts Juried Exhibition will continue until Monday, March 29, in Gallery One.
  • The Artist in Residence Annual Exhibition, consisting of six current artists in residence, will be shown Feb. 28-April 12 in Gallery Two.

  • Rowandan genocide survivor Immaculée Ilibagiza brings her story of faith to campus 7 p.m. March 16 in the Derryberry Hall Auditorium.
  • Ron Barron, principal trombonist of the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1975 until 2008, public recital, 7:30 p.m., March 28, Wattenbarger Auditorium

Joan Derryberry Art Gallery

  • Jack Girard’s collage and mixed works will show until Saturday, March 20.
  • Sculptor Jennifer Torres displays her interesting interpretation of watercraft March 22 through April 9. Gallery talk 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, March 23.
  • Sami Lange presents her printmaking exhibit April 12 through May 7. Gallery talk 4:30 p.m., Tuesday, April 13.

The Appalachian Center for Craft is located six miles off Highway 56 (Interstate 40, Exit 273) near Smithville. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily. The Joan Derryberry Art Gallery is located on the first floor of the Roaden University Center and is open to the public from 10 a.m.-4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday.
