TTU arts roundup: Lyric Trio makes debut Sept. 12
Featured on the program are two original works for this instrumentation and several arrangements written especially for the group.
Carl Reinecke's "Trio" is the cornerstone composition for this ensemble. Written in 1905, the music shows the influence of Brahms, with whom Reinecke worked on numerous occasions in his position as conductor of the Gewandhaus Orchestra and as a well-known concert pianist. Alec Wilder was an American original, having written in popular, jazz, and classical idioms. He worked with such stars as Frank Sinatra, Mitch Miller, Peggy Lee and Tony Bennett while writing concert music, opera, and film scores. His "Suite for Clarinet, Horn and Piano" is a fine example of his eclectic approach to composition, fusing jazz and popular styles in a concert work.
TTU hornist and composer Greg Danner has penned several arrangements for the group, including Ravel's sparkling "Rigaudon" from Le Tombeau de Couperin, a free setting of the Lennon/McCartney classic "Yesterday" and Lew Pollacks' Dixieland standard "That's a Plenty."
Trio members Katherine Belvin on clarinet, Danner on horn, and Joshua Pepper on piano have strong connections to TTU.
Belvin, a 2004 graduate in music performance, was a student of Dan Hearn and Anne Thurmond. Belvin has since completed the master's degree from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music and the doctor of musical arts from the University of Georgia. She has worked as a studio clarinet instructor for several Augusta-area music programs and has been a freelance performer in the area. She has just accepted a position as clarinet instructor at the University of South Carolina at Aiken.
Danner is professor of music at TTU and well-known to area audiences. An award-winning composer and hornist, he performs with TTU's Brass Arts Quintet, Bryan Symphony Orchestra and the Murfreesboro Symphony Orchestra. He also performs on alto horn with the Southern Stars Symphonic Brass Band and the Jack Daniel's Silver Cornet Band.
Pepper, a 2004 graduate of TTU, was a student of Catherine Godes. Following his education at Tech and Louisiana State University, Pepper worked with the LSU Opera and freelanced as an accompanist and vocal coach. He has served as music director and accompanist for the Des Moines Metro Opera and the Pensacola Opera Artists-in-Residence Program. Pepper is currently the music director for the Shreveport Opera Xpress program and chorus master for the Shreveport Opera.

Appalachian Center for Craft
- Leah Gose's exhibit, "What I Remember," is a photographic series that captures and preserves memories in the form of photographic objects. The exhibit runs through Sept. 15 in Gallery Two of the Appalachian Center for Craft.
- "Metal Under Glass," a collection of enameled metal vessels made by Sarah Perkins, is on display in Gallery One of the Appalachian Center for Craft through Sept. 29.
Joan Derryberry Art Gallery
- Photographic exhibit by Hans Gindlesberger, "I'm in the Wrong Film," opens Sept. 1 and concludes Sept. 28. Gallery talk and reception is 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 28. This is a Center Stage event.

- Associate professor of violin Wei Tsun Chang presents composer Charles Ruggiero and Atlantic Ensemble 7:30 p.m. Monday, Sept. 27, in Wattenbarger Auditorium.
The Appalachian Center for Craft is located six miles off Highway 56 (Interstate 40, Exit 273) near Smithville. Hours are 9 a.m.-5 p.m. daily.
