TTU hosts Kodaly workshop for music educators, students and others interestedA Kodaly workshop for music education will be held in the Tennessee Tech University band room from 9 a.m. to noon on January 29.
TTU alumni Susan Garrett and Donald Garrett will present the workshop that includes seven sessions designed to enhance the sensation of singing.
The sessions of the workshop are as follows: Singing as Enjoyment and Motivation; History of the Kodaly Movement; Games, Parties, and Dances; Prepare, Present, Practice; Teaching to Physical, Visual, Aural Learning Styles; Teaching Vocal Beginners; and Techniques and Sequence for Older Beginners.
The final two sessions will be geared toward middle and high school programs.
Susan Garrett is currently the choral director at Lake Forest Middle School in Cleveland, Tenn. She has 22 years of experience as director, where she has conducted her choir at numerous conferences and concerts.
She received her bachelor’s degree in music education from TTU and received the Kodaly Certificate from Capital University in 1997.
Mrs. Garrett sings in the Choral Arts Society of Chattanooga, and she recently retired from the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera, where she played the oboe and English horn for 25 years.
Donald Garrett taught vocal and general music and band in the Cleveland and Bradley County school systems for 30 years.
Mr. Garrett received his Bachelor’s degree from TTU in music education and the Kodaly Specialist Certificate from Capital University.
He has performed in various chamber music groups and had also played horn with the Chattanooga Symphony and Opera Orchestra for 11 years. He has served as an officer in the Organization of American Kodaly Educators at local and national levels.
Pre-registration is $20 for the general public and $10 for university students, and on-site registration is $25 for the public and $15 for students. The fee includes the cost of workshop materials and certificate of in-service.
