Octubafest – the TTU Department of Music and Art’s annual celebration of instruments in the tuba family, including the euphonium, bass tuba and contrabass tuba – will include an extensive array of recitals and concerts.
The 36th annual celebration will be from Friday, Oct. 21, until Friday, Nov. 4.
The youngest of orchestral instruments, the tuba family was not featured in solo settings until the 1960s, when composers started writing music for large brass. Those compositions led to an explosion in the creation of music to challenge tuba family instruments. Octubafest at TTU provides a setting for tuba and euphonium students to demonstrate their technical and musical abilities using these more recent pieces.
TTU has one of the most recognized programs for the tuba and euphonium. The event schedule features a large number of students who study these instruments.
All of the recitals and chamber music concerts are free and open to the public. All will take place in the Wattenbarger Auditorium of the Bryan Fine Arts Building on TTU’s campus.
The Octubafest schedule, as follows, concludes with a special performance by the internationally-recognized Tennessee Tech Tuba Ensemble. Part of TTU’s homecoming festivities, the ensemble’s Nov. 4 performance is a celebration of its 45th anniversary. The concert will include a performance by the 45th Anniversary Reunion Alumni Ensemble, The Tubas Unlimited.
