Former TTU Nursing Dean Barbara Reynolds accepts the award from Putnam First Mercantile Bank’s Chris Holloway, president of the TTU School of Nursing Development Council.
Retired Tennessee Tech University School of Nursing Dean Barbara Reynolds has been named recipient of the school’s Florence Nightingale Award.

The award was presented to Reynolds April 12 during the school’s scholarship banquet. Reynolds served as the school’s dean from 1991 to 1998.

“Dr. Barbara Reynolds served with honor and distinction as dean of the School of Nursing, and helped continue the improvements and upgrades that have resulted in the program being the high-quality program it is today,” said C. Pat Bagley, dean of the College of Agricultural and Human Sciences. “Dr. Reynolds is one of a series of outstanding leaders in the School of Nursing, with the program currently being recognized as one of the outstanding nursing programs in the United States today. Dr. Reynolds continues to be active in the community of Cookeville, and still serves on many nursing boards, including our scholarship selection committee.”

The TTU School of Nursing Development Council selects the recipient of this award with recommendations from the faculty and medical community. The Florence Nightingale Award is presented to individuals in the nursing profession who have given outstanding service to the School of Nursing and to the community in the field of nursing. Florence Nightingale (1820-1910) laid the foundation for what is the profession of nursing today, and in 1860 established the first nursing school at St. Thomas’ Hospital in London.

Also during the banquet, 85 academic scholarships for the 2010-11 academic year worth approximately $80,000 were presented to students and provided by 30 individuals, endowments or groups.

“The 85 scholarship recipients represent some of the brightest, most committed students either in or entering the field of nursing. The individuals and groups who donate scholarships contribute greatly to the educational opportunities of these students here at Tech,” Bagley said.
