TTU slides into Trombone Days March 26-27
The Tennessee Tech University Department of Music and Art kicks off TTU Trombone Days March 26-27 with a concert by Slide Company on Friday, March 26.
Slide Company is a Nashville-based jazz trombone ensemble co-led by TTU professor of trombone Joshua Hauser and Nashville-based trombonist Bill Huber. The free concert is set for 7:30 p.m., Friday, March 26, in Wattenbarger Auditorium of the Bryan Fine Arts Building located at 1150 N. Dixie Ave, Cookeville.
This ensemble has appeared on Nashville Public Radio’s Live in Studio C and is based in the traditions of the J.J. Johnson and Kai Winding-led trombone groups of the 1950s and ‘60s.
Featured on Saturday, March 27, will be acclaimed trombonist Ronald Barron, the recently retired but by no means resting principal trombonist from the Boston Symphony Orchestra.
The day begins with a 9 a.m. warm-up session with Hauser, followed by a master class with Barron at 10 a.m. Barron was principal trombonist for the Boston Symphony Orchestra from 1975 until 2008 and was also principal trombonist for the Boston Pops for 13 seasons. Then, at 1:30 p.m., Hauser leads a reading session of works for trombone choir. All trombonists are encouraged to bring their instruments to both sessions.
At 3 p.m. Nashville-based trombone choir Bone Therapy performs the first in a series of mini-recitals, followed by Tromboteam! at 3:45 p.m. and a group from the University of Tennessee-Knoxville at 4:30 p.m.
Barron will close the evening with a recital at 7:30 p.m., accompanied by Paul Thurmond on piano and Trombones at Tech: The Tennessee Tech Trombone Choir.
Barron’s visit to campus and the Slide Company performance are sponsored by Center Stage. The events are free and open to the public.
The day’s events on March 27 also include exhibits of sheet music, trombones and mouthpieces.
This is the second TTU Trombone Days event, following a highly successful one in 2007. The next TTU Trombone Day is set for March 26, 2011, featuring world-renowned jazz trombone group The Capitol Bones with Matt Niess.
