The energy that comes when almost 11,000 students head toward Tennessee Tech University is building on campus and in the community.

Students begin moving into residence halls on Thursday, Aug. 26, on Great Move-In Day. About 335 students will call New Hall North home for the first time as the new $22 million complex, complete with grill, sorority suites, convenience store and state-of-the-art classroom, opens its doors.

That evening Captain Henry, TTU senior Henry MacAfee, and special musical guests All of Us will perform at the Backdoor Playhouse. Enjoy coffee and music from 8 p.m. to 11 p.m. Opening the show is Tech vocal major Jesse Nance sharing a blend of classic jazz standards and contemporary hits with the debut of her new band, All of Us. The show is free, but donations will be accepted for the performers and the Tech Players.

At 3 p.m. Friday, Aug. 27, freshmen and their families will gather for Convocation in Eblen Center. New students, all dressed in purple shirts, will recite an academic oath of integrity with TTU Provost Jack Armistead. They will be introduced to their academic deans and campus leaders before singing the Tech Hymn with the Golden Eagle marching band.

Steve Rains, president and CEO of Progressive Savings Bank and the Rains Agency, will be the featured speaker. After the ceremony, students and their families will be treated to a free picnic.

Classes begin Monday, Aug. 30, but activities do not slow down.

Preparations are in high gear for Sept. 14 when the university will host Dr. Nolan Fowler Constitution Day and the Highlands Debate 2010. Information about these events are featured at www.tntech.edu/constitutionday.

Students will enjoy activities almost daily during Purple Pride Days, which continue through Sept. 16. The community is encouraged to welcome students with decorations and discounts during the days leading up to the first home football game with Lane College at 7 p.m. on Sept. 16.
